1 Hour Free Parking

Free parking campaign

Along with Wiltshire’s Liberal Democrat Councillors, Duncan Hames is calling on Wiltshire Council to restore one hour of free parking in Council car parks. "We should be welcoming shoppers to our streets, not hitting them with hefty parking fees," he says.

The Conservatives on Wiltshire Council scrapped one hour free parking a few years ago, but with your support Duncan believes we can make them think again, put the interests of local shops first, and reintroduce it.

Please add your voice to our campaign by signing our petition.

"We call upon Wiltshire Council and the Conservative administration to allow one hour free parking in all of Wiltshire' car parks to help local town centres and remove this parking tax on shoppers wanting to support local businesses."

Thanks for taking the lead, this is something I believe will be of benefit to Melksham in particular, I will publicise this survey amongst my friends and associates.

A great idea but let’s not limit it to just this one.

the charge for the first hour is putting off shoppers from using their local high street so they travel to a supermarket with free parking instead; and increasing parking in residential areas, inconsiderate parking and congestion

Charges only make people drive to free car parks, usually near supermarkets.

Essential for small businesses who rely on passing trade.

All County Councillors should stand for a few minutes in Devizes town centre which allows an hour free parking (or did last time I was there) and see what a lively vibrant place it is compared to the desert of Trowbridge town centre (our county town remember) which does not allow free parking. Then visit the out of town shopping centres where the car parks are now packed.

A very good idea. Free parking would, in my opinion, encourage locals and tourists to visit small towns such as Bradford-on-Avon and Corsham. When my wife and I have been on touring holidays abroad we have greatly appreciated the fact that we do not have to pay to park in small towns and villages. This has definitely encouraged us to make frequent stops and to buy coffees, food etc. thus putting some cash into the local economies.
